FOWL POX ALERT!

(Don’t confuse it with chicken pox in humans!)

Did you know?
Chicken pox (varicella) affects humans but not chicken.
Fowl pox is a serious viral disease that affects poultry — NOT humans!

How fowl pox spreads:

Mosquito bites (major carrier, especially in rainy seasons).

Contact with infected birds.

Contaminated equipment or farm workers.

Forms of fowl pox:

i) Dry pox (cutaneous): pimples/warts on comb, wattles, eyelids & beak.
ii) Wet pox (diphtheric): Sores inside mouth/throat – DEADLY!

Signs to watch:

Pimple-like swellings on comb & wattles.
Swollen, sealed eyes with pus.
Dullness & loss of appetite.

Why outbreaks increase now:?

Rainy season = more stagnant water = more mosquitoes.
Festivities (e.g. Christmas) = increased transport of birds = faster disease spread.

Prevention = BIOSECURITY:

Vaccinate at 3 weeks & repeat at 6 weeks (especially in endemic areas).
Control mosquitoes (drain stagnant water, clear bushes).
Restrict visitors to your farm.
Proper sanitation, fencing & carcass disposal.
Always quarantine new birds before mixing with your flock.

Remember: FOWL POX HAS NO CURE .
Only prevention & supportive care can help. During outbreaks, vaccinate only healthy birds. Always consult a qualified vet.

Kindly be alerted to protect your flocks this rainy season.
